After graduating from the University of Northumbria with a BA Hons in Contemporary Art Practice I have continued my practice exhibiting my work and participating in workshops and arts festivals. I also work as a tutor of art and textiles at Xaverian College in Manchester and have recently completed a Masters of Art in Teaching and Making.
I am continually intrigued and inspired by the changing colours and textures of a landscape through shifting weather patterns and seasons. The aim of my work is to capture moments in time whilst in a particular landscape. I like to paint and draw outside so I can experience the atmosphere of that moment and capture the elements as spontaneously as possible.
I like to work with watercolour in a way which utilises its fluidity but, also by wiping it back and layering it up, I also like to collage my initial and spontaneous drawings to develop into my paintings which are usually made with acrylic paint, amongst other media. I occasionally work with oil paint but, find other media more suited to working outdoors. Although I do work on pieces back in my studio at my home I try to keep the spontaneity of a piece by working from drawings and annotations rather than photographs, and by working on several paintings at the same time. When a painting is done you just know...and hopefully it is a true, emotional, representation of that place.
